The Germanic leader did not rule over subjects. His relationship corresponded to an alliance and support pact between freemen with equal rights; it was carried by voluntarism, self-confidence and freedom-pride, by the feeling of personal worth and the mutual ability for respect and responsibility. All rights and duties between leader and following were reciprocal and extended beyond the purely practical, legal, economic and political sides of life into the higher one of morality.
As the leader made the right of his following his own, viewed its distress as his own, so did it view his honor as its own, his glory as its own and perceived its injury or disgrace as that of the whole following. “Going into battle”, writes the Roman historian Tacitus in his Germania, “it is disgraceful for the leader to be excelled in courage, and disgraceful for the following not to match the leader’s courage; to return from battle without the leader, is a dishonor for life, an irremovable disgrace; to defend him, to protect him, even to assign one’s own deeds to his glory, is the most sacred obligation; the leaders fight for victory, the following fights for the leader.”
In the womb of the clan was the spring of life; it was nourished by the hereditary seat, which was inseparably bound to the family. The field crops, the Odal, formed for each full-blooded Germanic person, for the leader as well as for the follower, the life-foundation. Since the folkish community consisted only of peasants, the peasant leaders were at the same time folk leaders. Their peasant nature was just as little lost by the collision with the Roman world and inconstant life of the folk wandering as it could have been uprooted by warrior glory and battle-lust.
Unshakeable, they held firm to their life task, to maintain the freedom of the homeland and home soil, and to protect the agricultural work. When Bojokal, the leader of the Ampsivarier, while seeking land met with the Roman rulers, he utters the following words while looking up at the sun with raised arms: “As heaven is to the gods, so be the earth given to men, and all land that has no master, can be taken into possession by anyone.” The Roman delegate misunderstood the legitimate demand of the Amsivarier; he only wanted to give land to their leader in order to win him as an ally. Bojokal, however, rejected such a demand as “reward for treason” with the words:
“We can lack land to live, but not to die.”
From this attitude speaks the loyalty of the Germanic leader, who feels bound for better or worse to his following and rather chooses death than to accept advantages that his folk must do without.

It was in October 1941. From Amsterdam, the journey went towards the north. We might have already travelled 40-50 kilometres, then we suddenly saw only very young trees and only very new farmsteads. The Sod had not yet grown together like on the old meadows of the land crossed up to that point.
New Land!
Single-Family farmsteads everywhere, then suddenly more houses: a church, a school, post office and public buildings, a store, dairy and peasant coop close to each other, but still not an actual village, this slootdorp.
The signposts pointed to Middenmeer and Wieringerwerf. These three little towns that are actually more a center point than villages, form the core of the surface of new land, reclaimed land that had been won from the northwestern part of the former Zuiderzee.
What a sum of intellectual preparatory work, of will power and sweat had been necessary in order to create this work.
Twenty Thousand Hectares had to be diked in struggle against low tide and high tide, had to be drained, made fertile and occupied with a few hundread farms.
And what a bounty of vitality then grows from such a work!
In 1929 the main Dike was finished and already in 1932, 1933 and 1936 the schools of the three villages were opened with 128, 154 and 109 children!
But the Dutch were not satisfied with this success, for only one part of such reclaimed land, although by far the biggest part, provides fully worthy peasant land.
The Zuiderzee must provide even more land in this centuries long struggle of these people with the sea.
In preparation and in part under already under cultivation is the northeastern reclaimed land with 48,000 hectares, the south western reclaimed land with 56,000 hectares and the southeastern reclaimed land with 96,000 hectares, thus altogether another 200,000 hectares, which in surface area corresponds to about a dozen large-scale farms in the Ukraine
But they did not initially tackle the individual stretches of reclaimed land.
Instead they first did something that the soldier would compare with the preperation for a battle of encirclement: they eliminated the enemy's main mass with his inexhaustible reserves, the north sea with low tide and high tide, that stands behind the West Frisian islands ready for ever new attacks
That was done through one of Europes most daring and large scale building plans, through the construction of an almost 30 kilometre closing dike.
It closes off the Zuidersee, the southern sea, from the north sea and the shoals.

The Leader of the Volunteer Dutch Legion at the 1941/1942 winter solstice:
Out of the purest conviction, recognising the world enemy Bolshevism and Jewry, you rushed to the recruitment officers in order to be accepted into the Dutch Legion
As the best sons of the Netherlands you volunteered for the front by the thousands in order to fight for a better europe, for the future of your children and grandchildren.
Without regard for rank and occupation you now stand in the battlefront against the destroyers of freedom, honour and culture.
Shoulder to shoulder with the comrades of the Waffen-SS, you will not sheathe your sword until the world enemy lies on the ground crushed.
That you stand your ground just like your comrades of the SS Division Westland, i proven to me by your fighting will that you have demonstrated so often when you ask again and again:
"When Do we Go to the front?"
Now You will go to the front and you will fight and triumph!
Your narrower homleand looks at you and at your deeds. That you will not disapoint it, i am certain.
After This war, you will return to your homeland as victorious heroes!
But you will show the folk comrades - who have not yet understood or do not want to understand what it is about - that you have become steel hard men through the struggle and that you are the poineers for a new, great future.

"Middelburg, September 24, 1941
"I hereby confirm with thanks your letter of the 15th of this month. I can inform you that I have received a letter from my son in which he informs me that his left eye has been injured so that he can not longer see with it.
"But he is very cheerful. Again and Again one reads in his letters that the price he has paid for his Fuhrer is not too great. From his letters, however, I notice one fear and one demand, the fear of being declared unfit for duty.
"It is his wish to be allowed to be allowed to continue to fight for Europe's rejuvenation
"My Son Hans has only one wish, not to be discharged, rather to somewhere continue to fulfill his duty as a soldier.
"It would be our wish to wish to have Hans here on Vacation for a short time. Our Son being inclined as he is, the worst thing that could happen to him would be if he were discharged as unfit for duty, therefore I ask you to do everything in order to prevent that."
