What could possibly go wrong? Words fail, really. How can any politician in the UK see this as a reasonable solution? Who would make sure that these people stay put? It's quite possible that many of them could just melt away into the surrounding countryside and then turn up again who knows where?

Too little, too late, I think. The UK does pretty much nothing about illegal immigration. In fact, one Government minister once admitted that nobody has any idea how many illegals are in the UK.
