Nikolay Marr was son of a Scotsman James Marr and a Georgian Agati nee Magularia, born in Kutaisi on 25 December 1864. He was historian and archeologist, he knew many languages and had put forward a hypothesis about common origin of Caucasian, Semitic, and Basque languages, which languages he called parts of the "Japhetic family". In 1912 he become academician of the Saint-Petersburg State University.
Marr was a churchwarden, but in spite of this he sided with the bolsheviks after October Revolution. Having no linguistic education Marr was announced to be a great linguist; Marr modified his linguistic views making a queer jumble with marxism, so-called New Language Doctrine (aka Marrism or Yafetizm). He with his pupils announced modern conception of language families (especially the Indoeuropeistics) fascist and bourgeois pseudoscience. They declared language a superstructure over the social-economic basis, declaring it a tools of production later on; also they declared language in prehistoric society an instrument of the priests in the class struggle. Marrism rejected conception of proto-languages and declarted language develepment as result of mixing of different languages. Thereby Marr rejected his own Japhetic conception, already calling Japhetic languages of the exploited classes, declaring that different classes have different languages. In addition he proclaimed that all the languages of the world descended from a single proto-language which had consisted of four "diffused exclamations": sal, ber, yon, rosh. Most of Marr's criticist were victimized, killed, or imprisoned. Marr died on 1934, but his doctrine persisted as solely reliable till 1950, when Stalin criticized it in his article "Marxism and the linguistic questions"
