Finally got an answer on AR-15 barrel lengths.
20 inch barrel with 5.56 is accurate on a man sized point target out to 550m. Subtract 25 m for every 1 inch from the barrel. Area target 800m.

The M-4 is just a short-barreled M-16, with a collapsible stock, in service since the 1960's, itself derived from the AR-15 which was designed in the late 50's.

Are you sure all the mechanics are the same and haven't been improved? If so then fair enough. I would like to see an M-16 in the same test. What was America using (equivalent) in 1949?

Whatever mechanics have been improved would be minimal. This is still basically the same weapon. The problems the early M16 had were caused by the munitions plant using the wrong powder in the ammunition. This caused the gas tube to become fouled.

I know it has an improved gas-feedback system to say the least. But of course the AK(1947) would probably've had similar developments. I know I'd take an M-16 over AK any day, and the M4 is significantly better than that.. But maybe an Australian L1A1 even more..

The M-4 is a decent carbine. Especially if one is expecting to be in enclosed spaces or vehicles. Purely dismounted, I'd probably take an M-16A4 equipped with a heavy barrel and an ACOG, if I had the option. Dad said he'd get 1/2 inch groupings @ 100M. He was asked to join the SAS and be a sniper but declined. He felt like the standard army broke his spirit too much as it was. My grandpa left me two guns, but they were both handed in by my uncle when the Aussie laws changed and I was only about 14..
