The 5.56 was designed for a 20" barrel, so was the .223 rem. It loses significant amounts of velocity coming from a shorter barrel.

Yeah oddly enough the 5.56 loses over all performance in a 22" barrel as well

Yeah. The 20" is the answer. I know that shorter barrels are en vogue right now, but I want top performance.
One thing that you might find interesting is that the 7.62x39 only loses about 200fps coming out of a 7" barrel. A Draco is actually a decent option, if used correctly.

I went with the 20" and a 1-8 twist and I couldn't be happier. Its another 200-300 but totally worth it

I got mine from a private sale. It has a 1:7 twist, which is a bit fast for 55 grain rounds, but I have found it satisfactory. I won't go smaller than 55 on that. It's a beast with 75 grain rounds, tho.

5.56 is still probably my go-to, but there are times where something a bit heavier is needed.
