But it is CRITICAL that the sights are correctly zeroed. A lot of people zero from benches. In the field you will not shoot from the bench. I suggest zeroing from the prone unsupported (which is exactly how I do it). This will help you to also "zero" yourself, so to speak.

What does it mean to be ready for a Boog? Mostly, it means being ready to watch your whole civilization go into a near collapse. In some ways little would change. Stores would still be open, even if goods are a little more scarce. Farmers would still grow crops and try to get them to market as best they can. In most cases there would even still be an electrical grid (unless someone decides that there shouldn't be one) and running water will still be a thing.
This is actually the only good news.
Police officers and government agents would all be marked for extermination and would rapidly become even more corrupt than they already are. Except the FBI which I think has already reached its maximum possible level.
So, with this mostly out of the way, we can actually focus on some of the sexier stuff.
This is going to be long. Bear with me.
A lot of guys plan to "bug out" and go to a wilderness. This is absolutely the DUMBEST possible idea.
What part of being alone in a forest filled with frightened, hungry, trigger-happy men sounds like a smart idea?
If you own a piece of property STAY THERE. When services are restored (and they will be) you will be able to benefit from that.
Furthermore, anyone who bugs out has probably removed himself from the field and thus will not have a place at the table when it comes time to talk peace.
All of your stuff is in your house. That's where water is, that's where food is, that's where shelter is, that's where your best guns are. Fucking stay there. Don't bug out; DIG IN. Improve your home's security position, make friends with your neighbors and be ready.
Onto guns.
My personal recommendation.
1 AR15 Semi-Automatic Rifle.
1 Mossberg 500 Pump Action Shotgun.
1 Semi-Automatic Pistol
1 Combat knife.
Now there can be variants to this. No doubt some prefer the Remington 870 Pump Action Shotgun, or an AK47 Clone rifle.
I'm not getting into this argument today.
I will say, the AR15 doesn't overheat as quickly and has plenty of parts and ammunition available, and can be more easily modified and is generally more affordable in today's marketplace. Indeed, the market is so saturated in cheap AR15 clones that Colt stopped making them because they can't compete with the prices.
My decision for the AR was largely economical, but as a tactical weapon it's a solid choice.
AR15 details: My personal recommendation is a 20" barrel with a 1/8 twist. That can be hard to find, so most would go with a 1/9 twist.
The 5.56 round is meant to fly out of a 20" barrel. Coming out a pipe that long, the 5.56 will EASILY penetrate Level III or even some Level III A plates. This represents the most common body armor today; hence the decision for that specific barrel length. You can get a 1/7 twist if you like (mine is) but that requires a heavier bullet. Use a 1/9 if you are shooting between 40gr-60gr. With a 1/7 twist you should go with a higher grain bullet, such as a 65, or a 70 grain or more. Still, in a pinch you can use a lighter bullet through a 1/7, just don't expect peak performance.
Avoid drum mags. They are very finicky. There are good reasons the US military never adopted them for this platform, just trust me.
DO consider 20 round mags. Yes you lose ten rounds, but in the prone position they allow you to get closer to the ground.
The M1918 Picatinny Rail was revolutionary. You can mount a lot of really cool stuff, but remember that ounces become pounds and pounds can become pain. At MOST a forward grip, a flashlight and an optic. That's all I'd put on mine and actually, I haven't put ANY of those on mine, if that tells you anything.
One final note on the rifle: YOU AREN'T READY UNTIL IT HAS BEEN CORRECTLY ZEROED!!! You must zero the rifle for whatever distance you expect to fight at. Mine has a 300 Meter zero and I promise you that you can put a penny over my three round zero and cover all three shots. The tighter, the better (That's what he said).
Shotgun Details: Just get one, okay, goy. Pump actions are usually the most reliable, followed by tube fed semi-auto. I tend to avoid mag fed shotguns as they have a "crushing" problem that can cause misfeeds.
Practice shooting buckshot and slugs. Get it in a 12 gauge, and use 2 3/4" shells This gives the best balance between capacity and power. Slugs have a longer range than buckshot, but... well, they'll teach you about marksmanship.
The Mossberg 500 (specifically the 590) was the ONLY shotgun ever to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test. This test uses 3,000 full power buckshot rounds and has been described as "brutal and unforgiving". It also passed the NIJ standard0113.00 test. It's clearly a reliable scatter gun and my go-to for just about anything I'd use one for.
One important note: This is NOT normally a primary weapon. It is a good weapon, but for the same weight, you could carry a rifle with a lot more ammunition. This is a secondary weapon used to break padlocks and door locks. It's a weapon you give to the new guy who was valuable enough to be worth arming but not wise enough to have had a rifle ready when shit hit the fan.
Semi-Automatic Pistol Details: There are tons of these available and plenty of types to choose from. I picked a 1911 chambered in .45 ACP. That was my choice. To me the 7 round magazine was not a terrible hindrance because I recognize something that is frequently forgotten: These are SIDEARMS. If you have a pistol, that's great but if you have a pistol and a rifle then use the fucking RIFLE!
I generally recommend a 9mm pistol. It just so happened that I wanted a .45ACP, so I got one. Either one will see you through, you're just picking between capacity with velocity versus power with aesthetics. Not kidding, 1911s are sexy as the young Pamela Anderson, before a million surgeries, when she isn't talking.
The primary use of this thing is either room clearing if a rifle would be too large (which is rare), a side arm to keep loaded and at your side when you sleep, a weapon if you have somehow run out of ammo (DON'T!). A weapon to give the other valuable but unprepared new guy, just like it was with the shotgun.
Combat Knife Details: You use this for whatever you'd use a knife for. I don't suggest trying to use it in the middle of a gun fight. This isn't "Call of Duty"; you've only got one hit point and there are NO respawns. If possible, consider a bayonet that can actually mount to your weapon. It's a good thing in a pinch.
Body Armor: At least Level III hard plates. You should have a trauma plate behind the hard plate to protect your organs and bones from damage by the impact. If you can get higher levels, such as Level III-A or Level IV then you should. Level III will protect from pistol calibers and shotguns. A rifle round will probably zip right through and all it'll do is keep your organs in a nice spot for the coroner. Level III-A can stand up to a few hits from a rifle, but it's only rated up to a 44 Magnum. Level IV Plates are supposed to withstand abuse up to a 30-06.
Carrying solutions: These come to two things.
A load bearing vest (LBV) and a backpack. The LBV is perfect for holding ammunition pouches and a dump pouch for expended mags. It can be worn over body armor, or if the body armor has MOLLE weave, the body armor can double in this role.
A standard loadout for magazines is 7 magazines. That is one in the weapon and six ready to go. I do this for both my rifle and my pistol, giving me 210 rounds of 5.56 and 42 rounds of .45ACP.
A backpack is to carry whatever you don't put on the LBV. Travel light, guys. Food and water and maybe a little extra ammunition, and a few tools such as an entrenching shovel.
Camouflage: Secondary importance in most urban settings.
Dress for the environment. I live in a thickly wooded region. I use Flecktarn or sometimes Multicam. Both are excellent in a wilderness. The US Army's Forest pattern also works.
In a desert I'd go with Flecktarn Tropic, Multicam or the US Army's Desert pattern.
In Urban areas I'd probably look to blend in using civilian clothes and only carry a concealed handgun. If that boat has sailed, I'd say UCP pattern or one of the various "urban" patterns that have been designed over the years. Generally greys work better, but camo is notoriously ineffective in cities.
In a snowy area I might pick the UCP Pattern (due to its extensive use of greys) or just plain white.
For solid colors the choices are generally Olive Green, Desert Tan, Coyote Brown, Urban Grey, or Snow White. Most of my equipment is Coyote Brown.
Well, this post was quite a bit longer than I'd originally planned it to be. I hope, if nothing else, it has provided some food for thought.

View More"Collectivists, anti-Second Amendment advocates all, not only abhor the import and purport of the sacred right of the people to keep and bear arms, they detest the precious idea embedded in it, and embedded in the entirety of the Bill of Rights of which the Second Amendment is an essential component. It is the idea that a body of rights and liberties exist in man, bestowed by the Divine Creator in man and; that these rights and liberties are intrinsic to man’s very nature, and, therefore, are independent of any other rights (really privileges) bestowed on man by such man-made artificial structures, namely and particularly, governments. The notion that a body of rights exists, independent of and beyond the government’s power to modify, ignore, or abrogate, is anathema to the Collectivists’ ideology. The very existence of an armed citizenry is, on a physical level, a bane to a government’s power over the citizenry. But, on a philosophical plane, the notion of an armed citizenry, one absolutely 'necessary to the security of a free state'—grounded on the Divine right of a people to own and possess firearms, predicated on Divine law, independent of artificial social and political constructs designed by man, and arising from a teleological, God-based ethical and moral system—is a notion logically incompatible with the tenets of the Collectivist ideology and repugnant to those who adhere to those tenets. Collectivists realize that to realize their vision of a new world order...they need to destroy a free Constitutional Republic upon which our Nation rests. But, to destroy a free Constitutional Republic, it is essential for the Collectivists to first destroy the one impenetrable barrier to the realization of their vision: they must destroy the one guarantor of our free Constitutional Republic. They must eliminate the citizens’ exercise of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms. That means they must destroy the armed citizenry."
