You can always add charcoal granules/dust to the soil to hold moisture in dry areas, & it also helps to break down heavier clays too. Just my 2 bits, is all.

I have a lot of hostas and i know deer and rabbits like them when they start growing each spring, so i planted green onions (annual) all around the gardens about 3yrs ago, and they all keep coming up every year. Works great and we have plenty of green onions.
